SteelSeries Sonar for Mac: it does not exist, here is the equivalent

Published September 11, 2026. Sonar's status checked on September 10 on SteelSeries' site and support pages.

Is SteelSeries Sonar available on Mac?

No. Sonar, the audio console inside SteelSeries GG, runs only on Windows 10 and later; SteelSeries support confirms it is not available on Mac and gives no date. On macOS, the closest equivalent to its model, channels you set once, is a bus mixer like Morendo, with no driver. Wave Link 3 comes close with a driver and a mic chain; FineTune adjusts app by app, for free.

What Sonar does, and why it is missing on Mac

Sonar sorts a PC's sound into five channels, Game, Chat, Media, Mic and Aux, each with its own level and parametric equalizer. ChatMix is a single dial between Game and Chat: turn it mid-match and your teammates' voices come up while the game goes down. A streamer mode separates what you hear from what goes out to the stream. All of it rests on virtual audio devices that Sonar installs in Windows, one per channel.

That is exactly what does not exist on the Mac. Sonar's page lists "Windows 10 (RS5+)" as the requirement, SteelSeries support writes that Sonar "is unavailable on Mac" and that they are "working on bringing it to other operating systems, no set date". Their article on GG and macOS in 2026 goes further: new features stay Windows only, and Mac users keep their current version. There is no hidden build and no beta.

The mapping, channel by channel

Morendo, which we make, thinks like Sonar: buses, not a list of apps. You set a bus once, and everything you drag into it follows, from one launch to the next. Here is what each piece of Sonar becomes.

In SonarIn Morendo
Game channelThe Game bus, with the Footsteps preset if you play competitively
Chat channelThe Chat bus, with the Clear voice preset; Discord, Zoom and Teams sit there together
Media channelThe Media bus: Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube
Aux channelThe Other bus, or a bus you create, with its name and color
Mic channelNothing. Morendo does not touch the microphone
ChatMixTwo keyboard shortcuts: lower Chat, raise Game, with an on-screen confirmation panel
Equalizer per channelA ten-band equalizer per bus, 21 presets, a curve you drag
Virtual devicesNone, on purpose: no driver, nothing in Sound settings
Streamer mode, two mixesNo. For a separate mix to OBS, see Wave Link 3

What Morendo does not replace

Two things, said plainly. The microphone: Sonar cleans and equalizes the voice leaving your headset; Morendo only processes the sound entering your ears. On the Mac, the system's Voice Isolation and Discord's noise suppression do that job without installing anything. The stream mix: Sonar exposes virtual devices that OBS captures separately; Morendo creates none, by design. If you stream with a mic chain and distinct mixes, the tool on the Mac is Wave Link 3, free, with a driver and a system extension to install, and a window to keep open.

If per-app volume is all you need

Maybe what you miss from Sonar fits in one sentence: "Discord quieter than the game". In that case FineTune is free, open source, driverless, and gives every app a slider, with an equalizer and a boost. What it lacks is Sonar's model: fixed channels, set once, with a shortcut per channel. The detail is in FineTune vs Morendo.

Rebuilding Sonar in three moves

  • Download Morendo, drag it to Applications, launch it. macOS asks for a single permission, system audio recording.
  • Launch what usually plays. Each app shows up: drop the game in Game, Discord in Chat, the music in Media. Pick Footsteps on Game and Clear voice on Chat if that speaks to you.
  • Open the Chat bus shortcuts and record one combination to lower, one to raise. That is your ChatMix, without a dial, without leaving the match.

Frequently asked questions

Will Sonar ever come to Mac?

SteelSeries says it is working on other operating systems without giving a date, and adds that the 2026 GG features stay Windows only, with Mac users keeping their current version of the software. Nothing points to a release soon.

Does my SteelSeries headset work with Morendo?

Yes, like any output macOS can see: Morendo sends its buses to the output you choose, headset included. What stays on Windows is Sonar's software: the headset equalizer and the microphone processing.

Does Morendo process the microphone like Sonar's Mic channel?

No. Morendo only touches the sound that comes out. For the microphone, macOS Voice Isolation and Discord's noise suppression do that job without installing anything.

Do I need to install a driver, like Sonar on Windows?

No. Morendo and FineTune are built on macOS process taps, a public Apple API: no driver, no system extension, no virtual device in your Sound settings. Wave Link 3, on the other hand, installs a driver and an extension.
